Episode 4 SEX & CULTURE

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

This month we discuss sex, sexuality and respect. Violence against women has become commonplace; what role can culture and tradition play in rebuilding respect between the sexes? Or are our patriarchal traditions part of the problem? We bring together traditional chiefs, gender activists, politicans and academics to discuss such customary practices as initiation and polygamy, as well as attitudes towards homosexuality. We meet a lesbian sangoma, who says that homosexuality is not un-African. We also meet Bonani Yamani, a student who is suing his father and traditional leaders for taking him by force to a traditional circumcision school.
