This month we discuss sex, sexuality and respect. Violence against women has become commonplace; what role can culture and tradition play in rebuilding respect between the sexes? Or are our patriarchal traditions part of the problem? We bring together traditional chiefs, gender activists, politicans and academics to discuss such customary practices as initiation and polygamy, as well as attitudes towards homosexuality. We meet a lesbian sangoma, who says that homosexuality is not un-African. We also meet Bonani Yamani, a student who is suing his father and traditional leaders for taking him by force to a traditional circumcision school.

Hello I am Thierry Kusaka, and I want just speak about your big debate on SEX and culture. There is a difference between CULTURE, CUSTOMS and RELIGION – important to know before reaching any conclusions . But I much appreciate your intellectual debate. It’s the first time I watched it. I will remain a viewer of your show. I am of Congo kinshasa DRC, and I speak French.
Homosexuality, is one thing that I think we all misunderstand, the bible says alot of different things. I advice that we all go and read the bible carefull. God loves us all the way we are.
Nobody can change somebody who has been a lesbain or gay for the rest of their lives, because that persone was born like that.
Lets respect and love each other just as God wants us to love one onother, the way we are. Its everyones right to be the way they want to be.
RESPECT IS POWER!
If u want me to respect you, you have to respect me for who i am.
Children must be allowed freedom to choose whether they accept their culture or not.But it is very important for children to be taught how to behave in public places both referring to adults and also peers. One may use culture or ethos to live a decent life
Thank you for such a simuating show especially for a time like this in our country. I think that the South African democracy with its cracks and all, still remains a shining example of the true spirit of personal freedoms, rights and recourse but sexuall freedom is still an area where culture and religion are still dictating If we neglect these fundamental freedoms we are just promoting religious and cultural fascism. This will unfortunately have negative effects on the major gains wehave so far.
